Protecting unpublished articles in the age of AI

In 2023, we are all aware that published articles are likely to be hoovered up by ChatGPT or another AI large language model. Authors and journalists have initiated lawsuits, which may eventually result in legal redress against AI-related plagiarism, but this process will take years.

In a similar way, market-leading ESL editing firms are using large quantities of data to build their own in-house AI editing systems. Due to the fact that worldwide data-protection and privacy laws are vastly out of date, such companies are free to use unpublished academic research to train their in-house AI systems and to create AI tools.

International scholars can protect their intellectual property by investigating and choosing editing services carefully, asking direct questions about AI training, and using AI-free providers to edit their original research.
